THE GFEP CORE CURRICULUM

If you would like one of our products in a different language, please email outreach@mfopps.org or call us at 202.721.0050.

The GFEP core curriculum, published in 2006, consists of five modules: budgeting, savings, debt management, bank services and financial negotiations. For each module, the curriculum offers:

  • A content note that provides a basic overview of the topic
  • A trainer's guide with step-by-step instructions for conducting each learning session
  • A training of trainer's manual to prepare financial education trainers

The five topics cover a broad range of information:

Budgeting is a training course to help people learn how to set financial goals, to make a budget and to track monthly cash flow to make better financial decisions.

Savings is a training course to help people learn the benefits of savings and how to save.

Debt Management is a training course to help people understand the responsibility of borrowing, and to help them choose a lender and identify the costs associated with their loan products. It promotes sound borrowing and on-time repayment.

Bank Services is a training course to help people learn about how banks work, the types of products they offer, and how to choose the right type of bank service for their financial needs.

Financial Negotiations is a complete training course to help people learn how to achieve satisfactory, positive outcomes when they negotiate any type of transaction—whether related to business dealings or family decisions.

The core curriculum also includes the Implementation Guidance Kit, which is a compilation of technical information and working papers on market research, training adults, and measuring outcomes that together provide an overview to the financial education process. Managers and trainers can use the various components of this manual and the modules' flexible learning sessions to adapt the curriculum to their clientele.

Young People: Your Future, Your Money is designed for young men and women ages 16-22 in the developing world. The module's four chapters—earning money, managing money, financial services and financial negotiations—prepare young people for the social and economic roles they will play as adults. Activities and learning sessions are tailored to their needs and varied learning styles.

REMITTANCES: HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF THEM

Remittances module cover.

Remittances: Make the Most of Them is a curriculum to help people manage the remittances that are sent them by family members elsewhere. The course provides family members knowledge and skills to become more proactive about the ways they send and use remittances. Those who send remittances can learn how to compare services for sending and receiving and tools that will help them plan for a time when the remittances will cease. Those who receive remittances will learn how to set financial goals, how to budget and ways to save a portion of the funds.

We recommend purchasing the Implemetation Guidance Kit to complement this module.

RISK MANAGEMENT AND INSURANCE: PROTECT YOUR FAMILY'S FUTURE

Risk Management module cover.

Risk Management and Insurance: Protect Your Family's Future introduces the concept of insurance and pooled risk and reviews strategies used to manage risk for low-income households in the developing world. Clients and potential clients learn to distinguish between proactive and reactive risk management strategies and understand the long-term effects of actions such as the advantages and disadvantages of savings and/or loans and the consequences of selling assets. The curriculum builds the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for people to make informed choices among an increasing number of microinsurance products.
